5 Benefits of Drinking Water

Water. Some of us drink it when we are thirsty and some of us hydrate fully. But, does it really help? You bet it does. I think that at one time or another all of us have heard a way to calculate how much water to drink. Such as, drink half your body weight in ounces. This is a pretty rough generalization, because not everyone has the same requirements and body type! Moderation is key, drinking too much can be bad. A good indication of when you are properly hydrated is when you urinate clear. In our first official blog post at zenplease.com, we will be telling you about 5 fulfilling benefits of drinking water.

1. It can ward/fight off a cold.

It’s true, drinking sufficient amounts of water can help you fight off a cold by flushing toxins from your body. When properly hydrated, our bodies can work to their fullest helping to fight off a sickness. When sick, our bodies actually need more fluids. So by not hydrating during a sickness, you may be making it worse. One word: mucus. Even though we hate this stuff that clogs our body up, water helps create it during sickness. Mucus in return allows for our coughs to be more effective and prevent other sicknesses from making their way into our bodies.

2. Makes your skin healthier.

It won’t rollback years, but water sure can help your skin refreshed and radiant. When our skin looks unhealthy, it is because of a build up of toxins in our body. As we mentioned before, water can help flush these toxins away. Coldness and clamminess of the skin can be linked to not drinking enough water. After just one week of drinking an ample amount of water, your skin can and will change. Who wouldn’t want to look better? Fill up a glass and start now!

3. Weight loss.

Yet again, we are not promising you to drop 40 pounds in 2 weeks by drinking water like those commercials on TV. Water and hunger can often be misunderstand. Occasionally when your body is telling you are hungry, it may really be thirsty. So the next time you are feeling hungry, try drinking a glass of water instead and see if your hunger persists. When the body is dehydrated, fat cells in our body become bloated and rubbery and cannot be easily metabolized. So this means that it is more difficult to lose weight. Water is a natural appetite suppressor. Please remember that you still have to eat, water cannot supplement everything!

4. Gain some muscle.

If you are on a weight lifting regiment and you don’t drink enough water, you might as well stop. In order to move, muscle requires water. Without water you will not have any electrolytes in your muscles. Contractions of muscles come from electrolytes found in water. When you are dehydrated muscle control and strength are greatly reduced. Water does not help you gain muscle on your own, but will help you develop muscles while you lift.

5. Stay alert.

Water helps us stay alert and focused. When we are properly hydrated the circulation in your bodies is very good. Keeping a bottle at your desk or at school with you will help you stay awake and refreshed. No one wants you snoozing on the job! Our brains are made up of 85 percent water (at optimal levels), so by staying hydrated we are helping our brain too!

We hoped you enjoyed this blog post.
